Olympic fever

Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps are once again making news in the 2008 Olympic edition. I came across this link which gives a slight overview of their diets.

Hmmm .... I think i can reach the mark set by Michael. I am already eating as much as he does (may be more biggrin) . A bit of more food here and there and Michael Phelps will soon have a competition razz.

The Three Mistakes of my life ....

SPOILERS ALERT !!! .... Only read it if you have already read the book or are not planning on reading it

Hmmm... so where do I start ??. This piece of Chetan Bhagat is one of those predictable kind of books where in you just guess what would happen next and most of the times it works out that way (apart from some surprises here and there, but off course.) But hey, this is in fact the best compliment an author of a book can ever get cause the reader is able to connect to the characters in the book and can foresee what is going to happen :-p.

Story revolves around G Patel (Govind) and his two friends Ish and Omi. These three are chaddi friends. All three have certain qualities (good / bad ) that the other two are aware of and yet they stick with each other through thick and thin (almost i would say) without complaining.. After all Isn't that what friendship is all about ?? . Add in some more characters like Ish's sister, their parents, a Muslim boy and few people who form the "anti-social" genre and u have the complete chat-pata story in your hand !! ...

Since its fictional, be ready to accept the fact that the mistakes are not planned ones and coincidentally happen by chance. Also i have not come yet to digest that those three were actually mistakes.razz

Mistake 1:
Govind books a store in a big posh building where he invests all that he had saved and also borrows a lot of money thinking he could repay. However an earthquake causes the yet unfinished building to collapse and also the dream of Govind to make it big. Sheer bad luck i would say. cry

Mistake 2:
Next, Govind falls in love cool with his best friend's sister thereby breaking the code. Personally i don't see this as a mistake and is one of the points where i don't agree with the author.

Mistake 3:
This is really a mistake that if i would have committed, even i would have felt bad about it for a long time. Govind's inability to save Ali (Muslim kid) from being injured which could have been averted had Govind shown better presence of mind.

However if i were to judge the three mistakes, i would say that not able to save Ali from injuries is not that big mistake. I would say that the third mistake would be that of Govind calling Omi to the fateful place on the night of the riots which lead to eventually death of Omi. Circumstances created by a person which unknowingly initiate a chain of actions and causes loss of a dear friend is a far bigger mistake than injuring a kid's hand. But then ..thatz my opinion ..so tomorrow if i write a book, u now know what to expect wink .

On the whole, a very good book and a satisfying one !! ... The climax is full on bollywood style ... and the end is i guess purposely left a bit hanging ... just in case author decides to make a sequel to this book. How smart na ??? ... both author and me too cause i have figured it out . . ha ha ..

File converter

Before you start frowning and saying what gr8 stuff is this, my explanation: arre bhai free of cost hai aur kafi accha hai cool [ I wish i get paid for such publicity razz ]

So herez this one file convertor that works for linux and converts any file format to any....any matlab ..any . yakeen nahi hota ..toh yeah dekho

File Converter is free of cost web based utility. Quite good and i have really felt its importance when my boss suddenly asked me to give a document in a "abc" format when i had taken so much pains (yes ..for a change) and did the document in "xyz" format.

Do have a look :).

Googlization of google

Every Software Engineer believes in GOD ... yeah got it right ..Google Oriented Development biggrin.

We all know the success story of google, two college students starting it as a project which today rules the internet. However not many would know how google's web page used to appear previously .

The first thing to catch anyone's eye is the fact that google boosted of indexing ~25 million pages. Last heard, this number had risen to some billion pages razz.

Another insight, when google was still a Stanford research project, it was nicknamed BackRub. It was called so because google implied a technology that checked backlinks to determine a site's importance and hence the name wink .

The site also has a special note saying ""Google is research in progress and there are only a few of us so expect some downtimes and malfunctions." Imagine today google going down !!

Lastly, i really think google's webpage still resembles its first layout. If you remove the text part from its predecessor, it will almost come down to what google's webpage looks today (If you excuse the logos i.e. ). Simplicity .. isn't it ?

scratchbox in hardy

One sunny morning, i decided to upgrade to hardy on my desktop.I upgraded , and it started to rain (literally ..its raining now in pune :) ).

Starting scratchbox gives the following error in hardy:

Welcome to Scratchbox, the cross-compilation toolkit!

Use 'sb-menu' to change your compilation target.

See /scratchbox/doc/ for documentation.

Inconsistency detected by ld.so: rtld.c: 1192: dl_main: Assertion `(void
*) ph->p_vaddr == _rtld_local._dl_sysinfo_dso' failed!

Inconsistency detected by ld.so: rtld.c: 1192: dl_main: Assertion `(void
*) ph->p_vaddr == _rtld_local._dl_sysinfo_dso' failed!

Inconsistency detected by ld.so: rtld.c: 1192: dl_main: Assertion `(void
*) ph->p_vaddr == _rtld_local._dl_sysinfo_dso' failed!

The work around for this that worked for me is as follows :

Execute the following commands:

# sudo sh -c 'echo 0 > /proc/sys/vm/vdso_enabled'
# sudo sh -c 'echo 4096 > /proc/sys/vm/mmap_min_addr'

The explanation i gathered is that the first echo enables video support. The virtual memory "mmapped" page size is set to 64K.Therfore compiling inside scratchbox won't work. Hence the second echo.

If any1 has more insight about the same (other method / reason ) , feel free to enlighten me about the same :).

Last Few days......

OK ..first a explanation for the pervert frnds (yes you there), the title is intended to mean what happened in last few days ..and not my last few days. hah u wish !! ..

Apparently the best way to describe the last few days would be "unimaginable ". Yeah ..really. The last few days have been full of activities which otherwise i would have taken around a month to do it (considering how lazy i am .. may be over that :) ).

For the updates, last week top officials of my company went to showcase our product at 3GSM in Barcelona. (Inside news ...we are getting lots of good responses ;) ..yipeee )

On the weekend, family members ( mom particularly) decided that i have to go with them to nashik to attend an event. The important part to mention was that i was "told" about the decision and was not part of "making" decision . Not that i was busy a great deal ...but still ... kuch toh bhav hai apna :-p.

Tickets were booked, and the journey started. The only thing i thought of in the whole 4 hours bus travel was that our state government must do something about the state of the roads. I couldn't help but remember the famous words:

"Everyone travels on the left side of the road, in india we travel on what is left on the road"

However i later on realized that throughout the journey ,there was actually road repairs going on and our bus was forced to go from the leftover side roads. So much for the tax i pay ,huh !

11:30 pm we made up to our destination and soon i was dozing away in the comfy- cozy hotel room we had booked. Next day morning 8 pm sharp India-Australia match :-D. I know .... parents were just short of hitting me as i switched off the TV on time :).

I visited this place called Muktidham . It was real nice ..huge in fact. And then started the function. It was good, apart from the fact that most of the people were interested in finding soul mates for their son/ daughter , but it was still good. What mattered at the end was that it had good food and i had lots of eye exercise which was a welcome change:). In fact i had promised some one that i would take a girl's picture without letting her know and guess what i just won the bet :).

The return journey was more harrowing compared to one i had while going. It was nothing as i was promised.Nothing comfortable, stale AC , old movie . I was literally counting minutes before the torture ended. Infact, i couldn't forget the conditions for the whole next day as i could still feel the pain in my back :( .

Just when i thought that i had enough, an amazing thing happened which has never happened before in like almost 12 yrs. I woke up and early morning i had an unexpected guest having aaram in a nice place. Now am proud to say that our place is completely void of such frnds, but have no clue from where did he make it upto my bedroom's window. What followed next was a bit mayhem with mom sis going into the aggressive mood while i could tried my level best to get a momento of this uninvited guest. I guess he ( i guess it was he and not she , gut feeling u see) got real bored of watching all the motion happening with him being the center stage and decided to call it a day. He quite acrobatically returned from where, i assume, he had entered. I don't want to exaggerate this incident but am definitely going to remember this for a long time because thatz something unusual in my books.

In the end, hectic week with lots of events.Won't say didn't like them, but then had they occured every now and then i wouldn't have noticed it either this time around ;)

END !!

For geeks , visit this.

Only in Pune

If you know some one staying in Pune (India) let them know this. If you
are in Pune, do go through this story COZ, its a real one. Read this
true story…and let everybody you know in and around Pune especially
University Road……….

My friend lives in Deccan… One day he went to University Road to visit his uncle for some days as his parents had to attend a wedding in Alibagh. One evening he and some other of my college friends went to Adlabs for a
movie. He had so much fun that he forgot that it’s very late.

He caught the last PMT to University Road….. he reached University road around midnight. He had to walk about a mile from the bus stop to home. It was pretty late and not a single soul was visible for miles. As he was walking alone, he could sense that the night felt very creepy as it was so dark. While walking, he was astonished to see an old weird-looking guy selling some books. It was a very unusual thing to see a thing like that (man selling books so late ).

The situation got worse when he noticed that this old guy was unusually pale and staring at him… The old guy said “Son why don’t you buy a book…it would keep you company”.

Then my friend did something which he would regret for the rest of his life. My friend started to act brave & thought why not & had a look at his collections. My friend’s hair started to stand on end as he noticed that all the books were related to supernatural activities…but he found one that was very interesting.

So he asked the old man “how much is it, uncle?” The old guy replied, “Well son…this is an interesting book…it’s only for Rs 250.

My friend was shocked and said “but…but… it’s expensive”.

This time the old man stared which freaked my friend. My friend did not want to cross this scary old man, so he quickly checked all his pockets & found Rs.200 & said “This is all I have.” The old guy replied “It’s OK son… you can have the book for that price”.

As my friend was just about to run for home…the old man called back and said “Son … whatever happens, don’t ever flip the book to it’s last page… remember these words or you will regret…!!!!!”

My friend nodded and never looked back. Reaching home, he quickly asked his Uncle whether there was any new old book seller nearby?. The Uncle replied ” I haven’t seen him but ….we’ve heard that therez one old man who comes once in a while during full moon nights but heard that there is something creepy about it…why son?”

My friend freaked out. He told his uncle “nothing uncle… just asking”. He started reading the book with the old man’s parting words on his mind…At night, 2 o’clock, as he went to bed, a gush of wind blew which chilled him up to his bones. At that point, he noticed the wind had blown the pages to its last page. He remembered what the old man had said !!!

But we humans tend to have the tendency to know. Out of curiosity, he flipped to the last page & fainted… What he saw at the last page is stated below:

Don’t look further down if you have a weak heart

I warn you

Matrimony Personified

Over a period of time ,i have come across a number of mails which showcase (rather esoterically ) the profound emotion (desperation) of people to put across their "down-to-earth" and "i-don't-expect-much" attitude while applying for a profile description for matrimony. However their supreme command over the language not just conveys the "correct" message but also tickles even the hardest punter !!. I really felt like picking up few , which stand out ;)

Geek Code

The other day i came across this cool geeky thing and decided to give it a try.

My geek code is as follows :

GE/IT d- s:+ a-- C++++ UL+++ P+ L++ E+ W++ N+++ o+ K++ w--- O M V PS+ PE+ Y++ PGP+ t+ 5++ X++ R+ tv++ b+++ DI+ D++ G++ e++ h r--()>+ y

ok ok ... to understand what that means u need a geek decoder ( now how smart is this :) )

You can find a geek code decoder right here.

speed up menu popup in ubuntu

I came across this cool hack which helps to fastens the menu popup in ubuntu. Add it really works :)

Create a .gtkrc-2.0 file in your home directory and copy:

gtk-menu-popup-delay = 0
in the file. Now relogin and experience the difference :-D

Bluetooth wonders

Long time back i had decided to blog regularly ( daily !!! ) . The time frame increased to weekly, then monthly. So now after almost two years ( yeah, it has been that long that i am working, unbelievable isn't it ?? ) i have decided to come back to this battle field to fight the unwon war . Listening to music, i have now decided to write about bluetooth. Why this ?, arre bhai .. its my blog ..i can write about anything :-D

I actually have bought Nokia N73 lately, and my tryst at getting my photos transfered from PC to / from mobile brought me more closer to this technology. So herez how u do it on linux.

1. Bluez-utils / libs is the user space package that is needed to get bluetooth apps running. Get that installed

2.Check whether bluetooth is "on" . fire the command "hciconfig -a" to check output. No output from this command means, no bluetooth hardware available.

3. Next time to scan devices. "hcitool scan" does it .Bluez now has a rich set of dbus API's and i decided to use them.

Bluetooth protocol follows simple steps ..viz search, select , pair , connect , do your work, disconnect !!

As simple as it would get ;)

You can use GUI apps that does all those things with a click or use the dbus APIs (for the "ohh i need terminal people) and get things done simply.

Gnome has the gnome-bluetooth package whereas the ever reliable KDE has the kbluetoothd (my favorite :) )

You can refer this FAQ. Also the wiki is worth reading.

Adios ;)

phew!! writing the first blog !! (do i sound nervous?) ha ha . i think this turns out to be more fun then what my friends suggest .. however things r not looking that good to start with ... need to spend some time wandering around to check how things happen and how to make things happen !!
